“In 1985, A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was established and has since been one of the dental training institutes of choice in the state of Karnataka, India. It is located in Mangalore and has made a name for itself in the discipline of dentistry, recognized by the Dental Council of India and the Malaysian Dental Council. The institute has been able to achieve high rankings time and again including the 6th position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 under the ‘Dental Colleges’ category, as published by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India due to its quality of education.

In addition, there is a large 425 chair dental teaching hospital which delivers integrated diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitation services. The institute runs programs like Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) degree courses, Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree courses in specialist fields as well as PhD programs in addition to certain fellowship and certificate courses. The program of study is such that both practical and theoretical education is offered to the students. The institute is a partner to Okayama University Dental School, Japan; it is also somewhat of a practitioner-moderator of Oman Dental College in the Sultanate of Oman. It has also entered into MOU’s with Radboud University in the Netherlands and Université Paul Sabatier in France, which included exchanges of faculty and students.
