Thanjavur Medical College, one of the oldest medical colleges in Tamil Nadu was founded in 1958 with the laying of the first stone of the college building by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who was the president of India at that time. The college was to be established on the on the premises of Raja Mirasdars Hospital, however under the orders of Kamarajar, the Chief Minister of Madras and at the request of M.L.A. Parisutha Nadar, the college was built at its present site. Yagappa Nadar made arrangements for the site of the college through the Rotary Club of Thanjavur with funding assistance being made available from the Tanjore District Board Railway Cess Fund.
Thanjavur Medical College Hospital is placed to the South of campus and makes an active referral and teaching hospital capability with the existing capacity of 3000 beds. The hospital complex consists of units built at a cost of Rs. 38 crores which include all specialty departments, outpatient ward, and laboratory buildings set within a 300 bed capacity unit.

The Thanjavur Medical College has undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes. In the early days when under graduate courses were introduced intake was 75 boys and 25 girls now this has gone to 150 students with more female students than male students. The college offers postgraduate degrees and diplomas in various medical subjects so that the medical practitioners are opened up to a number of disciplines and even specializations.
