Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College (SLBSGMCH) is a prominent public medical institution situated in Ner Chowk, Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. Established in 2009, the college was initially founded as the Employee's State Insurance Corporation Medical College by Shri Oskar Fernandes, the then Minister of Labour and Employment, Government of India. In 2016, due to the ESIC's reluctance to continue managing the college, the project was transferred to the Government of Himachal Pradesh, leading to the institution receiving its current name. The medical college welcomed its first batch of students in 2017, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.

SLBSGMCH is affiliated with Atal Medical and Research University and has rapidly developed into a key medical education center in central Himachal Pradesh. The college is strategically located in the picturesque Balh Valley, often referred to as the breadbasket of the state, adjacent to National Highway 154. The campus spans 32 acres, complemented by a hospital area covering 45 bighas. It provides a comprehensive infrastructure that includes state-of-the-art college and hospital blocks, an 800-seat auditorium, a central library, lecture theatres, and well-furnished hostels for students and residents. The campus also features extensive sports facilities, including a gymnasium, badminton hall, table tennis, football ground, hockey field, and basketball court.

Academically, SLBSGMCH offers a robust curriculum designed to produce competent medical professionals. The college currently enrolls approximately 120 undergraduate students annually, with a total of 560 students. Additionally, it offers postgraduate courses in Microbiology and Pharmacology, along with Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses in Anesthesiology, Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and Surgery. The hospital associated with the college boasts a 500-bed capacity, featuring modern intensive care units, modular operation theatres, a dialysis unit, and an advanced diagnostic center. These facilities are bolstered by a robust HVAC system, centralized medical gas supply, and an innovative Inter Facility Transport Optimization feature.

The college prides itself on its dedicated faculty and support staff. Currently, there are 86 faculty members, including 19 professors, along with 92 residents who contribute to both teaching and patient management. The hospital staff includes 314 nurses, as well as numerous technicians and support personnel. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the college demonstrated its commitment to public health by operating a dedicated COVID hospital with 100 beds, including an ICU and operation theatre.

SLBSGMCH continues to strive for excellence in medical education and healthcare services.
