The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), situated in Imphal, Manipur, is a prestigious medical college and hospital that has been serving the North Eastern Region of India since its establishment on September 14, 1972. Originally named the Regional Medical College, it was inaugurated by Shri Y.B. Chavan, the then Union Home Minister, with the foundation stone being laid by Shri B.K. Nehru, the then Governor of Manipur, alongside the state's Chief Minister, Md. Alimuddin. The institution was envisioned as a joint venture of the North Eastern States to address the healthcare and educational needs of the region. Over the years, RIMS has undergone several transformations, including a change in its name to North Eastern Regional Medical College and later to its current name in 1995 when its management was taken over by the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India. In 2007, the institute was transferred to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

RIMS is affiliated with Manipur University and adheres to the norms prescribed by the National Medical Council (NMC). The institute offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses, including a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program, various postgraduate degree programs, and diploma courses across multiple medical specialties. The College of Nursing, established in December 2009, offers a B.Sc. in Nursing with an intake capacity of 50 students annually. Furthermore, the Dental College, which commenced in September 2012, provides a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program with an annual intake of 50 students.

The institute's campus spans 192 acres in an urban setting at Lamphelpat, Imphal, and houses a 1,074-bedded teaching hospital equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and training facilities. The hospital caters to over 2.4 lakh out-patients and admits more than 31 thousand patients annually, providing a robust training ground for medical students. RIMS also boasts advanced facilities such as MEDLINE access from the World Health Organization, a Tele-medicine Centre, a Regional Medical Library, and an Advanced Hospital Information and Management System.

RIMS has consistently focused on improving the health conditions of the North Eastern Region's composite population, excluding Assam. It plays a crucial role in bridging the gap in health manpower in the area by offering quality medical education and training in various medical fields. The institution is well-regarded for its commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to serving humanity, as reflected in its motto, "In the Service of Humanity." The leadership of the institute, under the guidance of its current Director, Guruaribam Sunil Kumar Sharma, and Dean, Prof. Akoijam Brogen Singh, continues to uphold the institute's legacy of excellence in medical education and healthcare services. With an endowment of ₹629.16 crore for the year 2023-24, RIMS remains a pivotal institution in the region, fostering medical knowledge, research, and healthcare delivery to a diverse and growing population.
