About College

Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, better known as Campbell Medical College, is a public medical college and hospital located in Kolkata, India. It started on December 1, 1873, which makes it one of the oldest educational institutions in India. The name was subsequently changed to Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College in 1950 after one of its graduate and a freedom fighter Sir Nilratan Sircar. The college is attached to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and has many departments offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The medical school and medical college distinctly merged into one structure on 1st July 1994, since then the college has focused on training students and conducting research. Innovations like the creation of the Bengal forceps in 1912 as well as the establishment of Urea Stibamine for the treatment of Kala-azar in 1922 emerged from the college. Clement G. Smith entered in the development of cholera toxin deterrents. The college has separated conjoined twins and worked on Natural Valve Replacement and Coronary Bypass.

The academia has a well-structured program taking in 250 MBBS students, 122 students MD+MS, 16 D M Students and 15 M.ch Students. The College is located 138, AJC Bose Road, Sealdah, Kolkata which offers urban facilities necessary for its students & faculty members to carry out their academic and research activities. As an important requirement for functioning of this medical school, it is noteworthy that the college library has an area of 12,000 sq. ft which has been planned as Central Medical Library.

Apart from higher learning, the college and the hospital have a considerable role in the healthcare system of the area. The hospital has a bed strength of 1890 and has an average of more than 62000 admitted patients and treated more than 825000 outpatients in a single year. The same institution encourages and is funded for medical care, as it has done over 24000 surgery cases in one year including both minor and major areas and, over 1000 patients requiring dialysis.

Furthermore, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College gives better emphasis to the renowned past students and staff who broke new territories in medicine. Besides being a shrewd medical practitioner, Sir Nilratan Sircar also played a critical role in furthering science and technology education in India. He had a wider impact than the medical college as he was an active participant in education, business and politics of his time.

To conclude, as the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical college has a rich legacy of medical advancement, well-structured curricula, and significant advancement in the healthcare system of the region, it is a center for medical training, studies, and healthcare services in India.
