History

Madurai Medical College was opened on August 2, 1954, on the inauguration by the then Chief Minister K. Kamaraj and Union Health Minister Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. It was first managed under the jurisdiction of the University of Madras which was granted permanent registration by the Medical Council of India in 1961. Every decade the college has achieved major milestones including the Silver Jubilee of the college in the year 1979 and Golden Jubilee in the year 2004.

Campus and Location

The MMC is housed in an urban campus spread over 18.93 acres in Madurai and combines old traditions with new concepts. The college is attached to the Government Rajaji Hospital that was set up in the year 1842 and became a teaching hospital in the year 1954. More than twenty million populations in southern Tamilnadu are enrolled in this hospital as it provides tertiary care services, thus making this hospital one of the most busy in the state."

Academic Programs
