The IPGMER stands for ‘Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, this institution was established more than 300 years ago dating back to the year 1707, when the Old Fort Gerstein Place in Calcutta saw the emerging of the first hospital. The nation leader during that time, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, on 16th January 1957 inaugurated the facility and marked it as Medical Center of Excellence as well as surgical hospital. The establishment is now popularly known as, “SSKM” hospital and because earlier it was called Presidency hospital, it is now known as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital. IPGMER has progressed to an advanced multi super specialty hospital featuring centres like Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry and Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences amongst others.
