Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) has a rich history dating back to 1707 when the first hospital in Calcutta was built on the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The institute was inaugurated as a medical learning center of excellence and a specialty hospital on 16th January 1957 by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. Initially known as the Presidency Hospital, it was later named as the Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital, commonly referred to as SSKM Hospital. Over the years, IPGMER has evolved into a multi-super specialty hospital with advanced departments such as the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, and more.
