Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), established on September 14, 1954, originally named People's Medical College, serves as a prominent institution for medical education and research in India. Located initially at Humayun Nagar, close to the present-day Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, it was founded to address the growing demand for medical professionals in the region, which the existing Osmania Medical College could not meet. The college was named after Mahatma Gandhi and inaugurated by India's first president, Rajendra Prasad, on June 25, 1955. Despite initial financial challenges, the government of Hyderabad took over the college in 1956, ensuring its development and sustainability.

By 1958, the college moved to a new location in Basheerbagh, and in 2003, it was relocated to its current premises in Musheerabad, where a new facility, including a hospital, was constructed on the site of the former Musheerabad Jail. The associated teaching hospital, initially an infirmary funded by philanthropists and named KEM Hospital, was renamed Gandhi Hospital in 1958. Each year, 250 students are admitted to the MBBS program, and 88 postgraduate students join various clinical, non-clinical, and super specialty disciplines.
