Government Medical College, Anantnag, established in 2018, is a premier institution for healthcare education and medical services in the picturesque region of South Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir. Affiliated with the University of Kashmir and recognized by the National Medical Commission, GMC Anantnag aims to provide quality medical education and healthcare services to the people of South Kashmir and the Pir Panjal region. The college is located at Dialgam, a scenic area approximately 7 kilometers from the Anantnag district center. This institution is associated with several key hospitals including the Mirza Mohammad Afzal Begh Memorial District Hospital in JanglatMandi, the Maternity & Child Care Hospital in Sherbagh, as well as the Rural Health Training Centre in Sagam, Kokernag, and the Urban Health Training Centre in Brakpora, Anantnag.

GMC Anantnag offers a wide range of academic programs. The undergraduate MBBS program admits 100 students annually based on merit through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET UG). The college expanded its academic offerings in 2020 to include postgraduate training courses such as the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and postgraduate diplomas in various medical disciplines. Initially, the sanctioned strength for these postgraduate courses was 32, but it increased to 55 by 2023. Additionally, the affiliated Nursing & Paramedical College (CNPS) in Anantnag provides undergraduate courses for nursing and paramedic students with an intake capacity of 100 students per year. The college also affiliates with three other nursing and paramedical colleges in Kulgam, Pulwama, and Shopian.

GMC Anantnag has distinguished itself through several notable achievements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became the first medical college outside Srinagar to receive permission for RT-PCR testing, playing a crucial role in the region's pandemic response. The college published its first magazine, MEDCOLANG, in June 2021, showcasing the academic and extracurricular activities of its students and faculty. In 2022, GMC Anantnag hosted the North Zone Conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (KASOCON 2022), marking the first time such an event was held in Jammu and Kashmir. Further, the Department of Pediatrics hosted the North Zone NEOCON-2023, a national-level conference of the National Neonatology Forum of India.

In terms of medical advancements, the college initiated pacemaker implantation procedures in 2023, a first for South Kashmir. GMC Anantnag has organized over 70 state and national conferences and has hosted mega surgical camps in collaboration with the Rotary Health Club of India and the Health and Medical Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir. These camps, held from September 3 to 13, provided specialized surgical services at GMC Anantnag and various district hospitals in Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama.

The college's infrastructure includes amenities such as hostels, canteens, sarai, diet facilities, and comprehensive sanitation and hygiene services. Enhanced security measures and effective waste disposal and cleaning activities ensure a conducive learning environment. Student resources include e-forms, e-resources, timetables, clinical rosters, examination details, and library access.
