Gandhi Medical College (GMC) is a premier institution for postdoctoral medical education and training, serving the medical and health needs of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as well as the surrounding districts.

History and Evolution

Established: 1954

Location: Musheerabad, Secunderabad, Telangana

Initial Establishment: Initially started as an infirmary with 3 wards in 1851, it evolved into a Cantonment Hospital with 95 beds by 1900. By 1913, it became known as King Edward Memorial Hospital and grew into a teaching hospital for Gandhi Medical College in 1958.

First MBBS Batch: Graduated in 1959.

Educational Programs

Gandhi Medical College offers a variety of courses:

Undergraduate Courses: MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)

The college received permission for its undergraduate course in 1961.

The number of seats for the MBBS program was increased from 100 to 150 in 1999.

Postgraduate Courses: MD/MS, DM/M.Ch in various specialties.

Allied Health Sciences: B.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology and other paramedical courses.

Achievements and Distinctions

First Open Heart Surgery Centre: Gandhi Medical College has the distinction of being the first open heart surgery centre in the combined state of Andhra Pradesh.

Cath Lab Facilities: It was the first to offer Cath lab facilities for training DM cardiology students.

Facilities and Services

Hospital Services: The attached Gandhi Hospital provides extensive medical services, including emergency services, OPD services, imaging, and organ transplants.

Average number of patients treated daily in various OPDs: 2,750.

Student Facilities: Library, gym, hostels, and sports facilities including tennis, basketball, volleyball courts, and a cricket ground.

Anti-Ragging and Complaints Committees: The college has established various committees to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment, including an anti-ragging cell, National Service Scheme cell, Internal Complaints Committee, and Internal Quality Assurance Cell.
