In a significant development for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced an extension for the period during which FMGs can complete their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internships in recognized non-teaching hospitals. This extension moves the deadline from May 2024 to May 2026, allowing an additional two years for FMGs to fulfill their internship requirements.
The decision follows various representations and appeals from medical councils and FMGs who reported facing substantial challenges in securing internship placements. The original directive, issued via Circular No. U.15024/01/2022-UGMEB on May 9, 2023, validated the list of recognized non-teaching hospitals for a one-year period, set to expire in May 2024. This list was initially compiled by the now-defunct Medical Council of India.
"The extension is a crucial step towards addressing the deployment issues faced by FMGs," stated a spokesperson from the NMC. "It ensures that these graduates have adequate time and opportunities to complete their internships, which are essential for their professional accreditation and practice in India."
The list of recognized non-teaching hospitals remains accessible on the NMC website, under the circular dated May 9, 2023. This list is vital for FMGs to identify eligible hospitals where they can complete their required internships.
Medical councils and FMGs have welcomed the extension, expressing relief and gratitude. Many FMGs had raised concerns about the limited availability of internship positions and the administrative hurdles involved in securing placements. This extension provides a much-needed reprieve and aligns with the NMC's commitment to facilitating the integration of FMGs into the Indian healthcare system.
For further details, FMGs and other stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the official NMC website and the relevant circulars.
