The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya, located in Ragama, Sri Lanka, was established in 1991. It is one of the eleven state medical schools in the country, initially known as the North Colombo Medical College before its nationalization and integration into the University of Kelaniya. The faculty began with an initial intake of 120 students and has grown significantly, now accommodating around 1600 students. The first dean of the faculty was Professor Carlo Fonseka, and since its inception, it has seen a series of distinguished deans contributing to its development.

The campus spans 35 acres and is equipped with numerous facilities to support both academic and extracurricular activities. The main teaching hospital, the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, is located adjacent to the faculty and is one of the busiest tertiary referral centers in Sri Lanka. The faculty's infrastructure includes an open-air theatre, a multi-purpose court, a gymnasium, lecture halls, and examination halls. Additionally, it provides hostel facilities, canteens, and a common room for students, fostering a conducive environment for education and student life.
Highlights
Academically, the Faculty of Medicine comprises sixteen academic departments, including the Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry & Clinical Chemistry, Disability Studies, and Family Medicine, among others. These departments are supported by smaller units and centers such as the Molecular Medicine Unit, the Disability Studies Unit, and the Medical Education Centre. The faculty also offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the MBBS degree, BSc in Speech and Hearing Sciences, and a Master of Public Health.
The faculty has established strong academic links with foreign universities, enhancing its research capabilities and providing opportunities for international collaboration. Over the years, it has produced a significant volume of research publications, with several faculty members receiving prestigious awards for their contributions to medical science. The Molecular Medicine Unit, established in 2003, plays a crucial role in improving molecular diagnostic facilities and providing DNA fingerprinting services.
Culturally, the Faculty of Medicine promotes a holistic approach to education. It opened a Cultural Centre in 2009, offering programs in music, dance, art, and photography. The faculty also conducts yoga and Tamil language classes, ensuring that graduates are well-rounded and culturally competent, able to practice medicine in diverse environments across Sri Lanka. The presence of an elected student council and various student societies further enriches the campus experience, making the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya a dynamic and comprehensive institution for medical education.
