About
Relocation played a key role in the development of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1981, the faculty moved to Thirunelvely, which provided more space and facilities for its growing student body and academic staff. Despite the challenging circumstances of Sri Lanka’s civil war, which caused significant disruptions, including halted construction projects and damage to university properties, the faculty continued its education and healthcare services. The partially completed library began functioning in 1986, symbolizing the resilience and commitment of the institution to its educational mission.
Highlights
The civil war's impact on the University of Jaffna was profound. Hostilities led to extensive damage to buildings and equipment, and tragic losses of life among students and staff. The 1980s and 1990s were particularly tumultuous, with frequent aerial bombings, economic blockades, and curfews that disturbed academic life. Despite these adversities, the Faculty of Medicine maintained its operations, underscoring its critical role in the region's healthcare system and education sector.
In the face of these challenges, the Faculty of Medicine expanded its academic offerings and facilities. The university received approval in 1985 to establish a Faculty of Agriculture in Kilinochchi, although construction was delayed by the war. The faculty’s movement to Thirunelvely in 1978 and the establishment of new faculties highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance educational infrastructure despite external pressures. This expansion was part of a broader effort to provide comprehensive education and support to the region's students.
Today, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jaffna stands as a testament to resilience and dedication to education and healthcare. It continues to educate and train medical professionals who contribute significantly to the healthcare system in Sri Lanka. The faculty’s history reflects its persistent efforts to overcome adversity and sustain its mission of providing high-quality medical education and services, maintaining vital links with the broader medical and academic community.
