Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, established in 1979, began as a second campus of Hanoi Medical University to accommodate the growing number of medical students. By 1985, it had evolved into a branch of Haiphong Medical University under Hanoi Medical University. In 1999, it gained independence as Hai Phong Medical University through a Prime Minister's decision and was later renamed Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 2013 under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
